6 Things To Do After An Adjustment

Chiropractor Navarre FLChiropractic adjustments in Navarre have many great benefits. Adjustments can provide immediate relief from back pain, spinal misalignment and other injuries. Adjustments can also help your spinal column by encouraging the spine to assume a healthier position in the body. Having adjustments done regularly teaches the body and the spine to work together more efficiently, which in turn betters your health.

However, when patients first begin seeing a chiropractor, the adjustments made may not last very long because the spine’s natural tendency is to go back to its old posture. For this reason, we recommend patients who are first beginning a treatment plan to visit the chiropractor frequently. Fortunately, there are many different things that a patient can do to help the spine hold its new posture for as long as possible!

SIT PROPERLY

We know posture is important. When seated for a long time maintain a neutral position. Face straight ahead with your feet flat on the floor in front of you. Keep your core tight while sitting and make sure to take your wallet or phone out of your back pockets.

GET MOVING

Exercise that strengthens your back and core muscles help your body stay strong, balanced and coordinated after a chiropractic adjustment. Pilates and yoga are great options for many people but patients who are recovering from back injuries need to be careful with the type of exercise they seek.

HYDRATE

Drinking water is great for the body but it’s especially needed after an adjustment. Drinking lots of water after your adjustment will help nourish the discs between the vertebrae of your spine, keeping it supple and flexible. As a good way to estimate, you should drink about half your body weight in ounces.

AVOID SITTING FOR LONG

Immediately following your chiropractic adjustment it’s recommended to keep your spine in motion. This will help your body settle and keep your spine properly aligned. If you have a long drive after your adjustment go for a short walk before getting in the car. When you get back, stay active by walking around or doing light housework.

SLEEP

To promote a healthy and neutral spine, try to sleep on your side or back following your chiropractic adjustment. After an adjustment is a great time to get a pillow that will help support your spine. There are many options on the market to choose from that can help your spine maintain a healthy position. If you’re not sure what pillows may be right for you, talk to Pickett Chiropractic. (850) 939-3339

If you’ve been wondering if visiting a chiropractor is right for you, here are 5 Signs You Should See A Chiropractor!

Understanding the Sounds Of An Adjustment

Every day can be a struggle when you are in pain. Some people experience chronic pain that is so debilitating that they are unable to accomplish even the smallest daily tasks.

If you are dealing with headaches, backaches, neck pains that distract you from what matters most, Chiropractic Care is the answer.

Chiropractors are professionals that emphasize their procedure through manual adjustments and spinal manipulation, offering gentle techniques to eliminate pain naturally.

When you think of a chiropractic adjustment your mind might jump to the loud cracking or popping sound that is widely related to adjustments.

Many patients experience it. It may sound and feel alarming to you at first, considering the procedure involves your spine, but there is absolutely nothing to worry about!

What’s that sound?

The simple answer is that when adjusted by a professional, the “popping” sound you may hear is completely normal and healthy. During an adjustment your back undergoes gentle yet rapid stretching of the spinal joint.

There are tiny pockets of air taking in the form of fluid which surrounds your joints which are released during an adjustment, causing popping and cracking sounds. They are also referred to as Joint Cavitations.

If you have tried popping your back on purpose and heard that cracking sound, chances are you are performing it in a way that is detrimental to your spine. It is not recommended to try to do the adjustment yourself!

Huge problems may arise here as you have no thorough knowledge or understanding of the technique in which only a qualified chiropractor works with.

Bottom Line: The popping sound is not something to be worried about. It is a regular part of the process and if you still have questions it’s best to consult your chiropractor about your concerns.

Does Chiropractic Care Improve Mental Health?

Chiropractic Care for Mental HealthChiropractic care in Navarre is most often associated with lessening of aches and pains of daily life. These aches and pains can be caused by exercising frequently, sitting at a desk for most of your day, a past auto-accident injury or countless other injury-producing events.

But what if the main cause of your daily pain isn’t actually physical, but mental? According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, depression is currently impacting more than 300 million people Worldwide. Additionally, roughly half of all those diagnosed with depression also suffer from anxiety!

While medications are most often prescribed for anxiety and depression, many people prefer to take the route of holistic healing. But how can Navarre chiropractic care, which is most associated with physical pain, help emotional healing?

How Does Chiropractic Care Can Improve Mental Health?

Misalignments Impact the Nervous System

Our body’s chemistry regulates our moods. This chemistry in your organs and brain are all regulated by the nervous system. Misalignment of the upper spine can cause pressure in certain areas that will cause interference chemically and neurologically.  People often turn to medications that are used to alter their brain chemistry, but those looking for non-medicinal therapy usually find that adjusting these vertebrae with chiropractic care often do wonders for their mental state.

Pain Can Cause Mental Fog

Anyone with chronic pain can attest to discomfort having a serious impact on mood and mental health. One reason that chiropractic care helps is by decreasing any physical pain that may be clouding your mind. As the spine becomes aligned and pain begins to decrease, anxiety and depression sprouting from your pain are proven to lessen throughout chiropractic treatment. This was further illustrated by a study of participants dealing with anxiety or depression who underwent 12 sessions of chiropractic care. As a result, muscle tension decreased and mental clarity increased as well.

A Common Cause of Depression is Chronic Pain

When you’re forced to deal with chronic pain as a part of your daily life, not only is it hard to focus but you don’t feel well enough to be social or take part in activities you may have once loved. Studies have proven that depression occurs at a rate of 3 to 4 times higher in those with chronic pain when compared to their healthier peers. The cycle of chronic pain and depression will only continue on and on unless it is broken. Having regular chiropractic adjustments decreases anxiety, depression and pain, allowing space for a healthier (mentally and physically) you.

At Pickett Chiropractic, we offer a variety of safe, gentle techniques which are designed to restore proper spinal alignment, improve nervous system function and alleviate pain. Our techniques are effective for all age groups – children to seniors – and treat the actual cause of your symptoms instead of just masking the symptoms as prescription drugs often do!

Chiropractic Care For Chronic Pain

Chronic Pain ReliefLiving with chronic pain is something nobody wants to deal with. Take comfort in knowing you are not alone! There are two major types of chronic pain: musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is related to bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Neuropathic pain is chronic pain that is often felt as a burning sensation or shooting pain caused by tissue or nerve damage.

What Is Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain is considered pain that lasts for three months or more.

How Common Is It?

Most patients report pain in their back, head or joints, whether from MSK conditions or another underlying condition. Pain in these areas can be caused by a physical event or trauma, like a car accident or a slip, but usually the pain presents itself without a known cause. However, there are numerous causes that can be addressed through conservative care.

Chiropractic Treatment

The good news for chronic pain sufferers is that there are options available for pain relief. Chiropractic Care in Navarre can help alleviate symptoms as well as correct underlying mechanical dysfunctions. We can also recommend exercises to keep the body moving and feeling good again.

A 2012 U.S. study revealed that patients receiving chiropractic treatment combined with exercise for chronic pain were twice as likely to become pain-free than those receiving pain medications. Amazing!

Chiropractic care can play an important role in the assessment and management of chronic pain related conditions. More and more studies are providing evidence of effective relief of chronic pain through chiropractic treatment.

5 Signs You Should See A Chiropractor

Most people think seeing a chiropractor is only when something has gone terribly wrong. Maybe they’ve been in a car accident or slipped and hurt their back or they woke up one morning with a stiff neck that just won’t go away. Whatever the reason, the fact remains that many people think chiropractic care is a treatment option for when something is wrong instead of a great preventable measure.

While Navarre Chiropractic will help you overcome pains and other symptoms resulting from an injury or accident, visiting us is also a great way to prevent many types of injuries.

Contact Pickett Chiropractic today to learn how a Navarre Chiropractor can not only help you recover from a current injury but also help ensure that you avoid common injuries in the future.

If you’re wondering whether a chiropractor can help you, here are 5 signs that you should see a chiropractor.

#1: You Suffer From Frequent Headaches or Migraines

Frequent headaches can have many causes but one of the most common causes is misalignments in the upper back and neck. If you deal with frequent headaches and your doctor hasn’t been able to give you an answer about it, a chiropractic adjustment may help reduce the frequency.

Many migraine sufferers have reported a significant reduction in the intensity and frequency of episodes with the help of chiropractic visits.

#2: You Have Chronic Pain in Your Joints or Muscles

The first place we usually go when we experience pain is to the medicine cabinet. When the ibuprofen and aspirin doesn’t work we go to the doctor’s office for the strong stuff. If the doctor can’t figure out what’s wrong we either suffer through the pain or continue taking pain medications that can cause even more damage in the end.

The pain in your joints or muscles may be due to problems with your musculoskeletal alignment. The body is designed to work as one big machine with many moving parts. Just like a car engine, when one of the parts slips out of place the engine can break down. A chiropractor is trained to make sure all of your parts are where they should be so that your body can function the right way.

#3: Sharp Pain Shooting Down Your Leg

Sharp pains down your leg, weakness or tingling may be a sign of a slipped disc or pinched nerve. If your doctor is unable to relieve your pain, a chiropractor may be able to help. If traditional treatment has been unsuccessful it’s possible that a compressed nerve is the root of the problem. A chiropractor will be able to examine you and perform an adjustment to alleviate the pressure being placed on the nerve that’s causing you pain.

#4: You Sit for Long Periods Of Time

Sitting for long periods of time, especially when hunched over a keyboard or phone, often results in unwanted pressure on your neck, upper back and shoulders and poor posture. The pressure can ultimately cause your bones and discs to shift enough to cause you problems later on, like a slipped or herniated disc. A chiropractor will be able to ensure your spinal column is properly aligned so you don’t run into problems later.

Performing repetitive tasks also takes a toll on your body and spine. Whether it’s typing constantly or standing at a register twisting and turning all day, repeated movements can lead to overuse injuries that cause parts of the body to shift out of place.

#5: You Live An Active Life

If you’re an active person your body most likely takes a beating. While it can help improve your physical and cardiovascular health it may be causing problems as well. When you do things like exercise or play sports our body is subjected to added pressure and strain. These factors can all cause your spine to become misaligned, resulting in problems and pain. After routinely engaging in these kinds of activities your body can become prone to pinched nerves, slipped discs and other alignment problems. Regular visits with us will ensure that your spine stays healthy while you’re keeping the rest of your body fit.
